Major League Soccer handed out a five game suspension and $1250 fine to Marcos Mondaini today, according to ESPN 700 Radio in Salt Lake City, after his tackle last Saturday broke the ankle of Real Salt Lake midfielder Javier Morales. Mondaini was guilty of going in from behind on Morales with a tackle in the first half of the game, and the surgery on Morales’ ankle will likely keep him out of action until October.

Mondaini, on loan from Uruguyan club Centro Atlético Fénix, had made a positive start in his first season with Chivas USA. He has appeared eight times for the club, and scored his first goal in a 3-0 win over New England two weeks ago. However, he now misses the next five games for Chivas, which includes match ups against New York, Los Angeles, Columbus, Vancouver, and Portland.

Since the tackle of Brian Mullan on Steve Zakuani several weeks ago, there has been scrutiny about how the league will deal with other tackles in the future. Mondaini’s tackle was the next one to be punished by the league, but he was served with just a five game suspension as opposed to the 10 for Mullan, and only a quarter of the $5000 fine that Mullan received for his tackle.
