Columbus Crew Sign Serbian Midfielder Dejan Rusmir

Columbus Crew have added some depth to an already solid looking midfield, signing Serbian Dejan Rusmir to a contract. Rusmir had agreed to terms with the club before Major League Soccer’s roster compliance date, but had to wait to receive his visa before the contract could be finalized. Rusmir has spend his last 10 seasons playing in the first divisions of football in Serbia and Romania, and he joins Columbus from Romanian club Farul Constanta.

Though they lost Brian Carroll and Adam Moffat, among others in the offseason, the center of Columbus’s midfield isn’t looking too bad. Rusmir joins Kevin Burns and Emmanuel Ekpo from last year’s team, as well as rookies Cole Grossman and Rich Balchan. Eddie Gaven can play in the center of midfield as well, and who knows what youngsters Andy Adlard and Bernardo Anor will contribute. Rusmir doesn’t seem like a lock to start, but then again, none of the aforementioned players are locks to start at center midfield. It’s probably still a wide open competition, just 10 days from First Kick.
