Fire Sell Gaston Puerari to Club Atlas
Per various media reports, Uruguayan striker Gaston Puerari has been transferred by the Chicago Fire to Club Atlas of the Mexican Primera División. The 5 foot 7 forward was signed before this season and impressed with his play, so much so that a famous Mexican team has moved to acquire him.
While MLS does not release terms of transfer deals, Atlas will certainly have paid a fee to acquire Puerari. The departure of the Uruguayan will free up cap space for the Fire as well as an international roster spot.
Puerari had been playing well early in the season in a partnership with fellow Uruguayan striker Diego Chaves. The Fire do have other options at striker though, such as Dominic Oduro and Christian Nazarit, who scored the winner in the team’s 1-0 victory last week over Columbus.
As far as Atlas is concerned, Puerari’s arrival could spell doom for Honduran striker Carlo Costly, who signed with Atlas during the winter. His status is up in the air despite his good form in this year’s Gold Cup. New Atlas head coach Ruben Romano recently hinted that Costly may be surplus to requirements, and Puerari could be his replacement.
