Brek Shea To Remain At FC Dallas Through 2015

After all the speculation about what FC Dallas would be announcing in their press conference today, we finally know who the big signing is: Brek Shea. Shea has been with the Hoops since 2008 on a Generation Adidas contract and rumors had been flying that he would be heading to Europe at the end of the season. Now, Shea has resigned with Dallas and will be a fixture at Pizza Hut Park through 2015.

Shea is still only 21 years old and has won two caps for the United States’ national team. The Texas native has been a big part of FCD’s team since he was selected second overall in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, playing many different positions. His versatility cannot be understated, in his four season with the club Shea has played everywhere from central defense to striker. The only position he’s yet to play is goalkeeper.

Keeping homegrown talent like Shea is a boon not only for FC Dallas, but for the MLS as well. The continued development of young American players is a key for the league going forward. This deal is also good for Shea as he will almost certainly be banking more than the $100,000 per season he had been making previously.

That said, having this sort of presser for a player signing an extension is a bit excessive, especially when that player A) isn’t the best player on your team and B) you’re still not sure what that players best position is. A simple press release would have sufficed for this sort of announcement.
